What I Read in August

Another month has flown by! Summer is officially over and I’m sad about it. I panicked halfway through August when I realized I had only read 2 books. I picked up a few shorter ones that were on my shelves to try to catch up to my reading goal. I’m still behind by 3 books which is super frustrating! I started my new job which has been a tad overwhelming (I didn’t even think about picking up a book after work all week) but I got to spend Labor Day weekend at the beach which made up for it.

If you want to catch up on what I’ve read so far this year, here are my reading update posts from January, February, MarchAprilMayJune, and July. And if you like keeping up with what I read in real time, you can follow me on Instagram where I post pics of what I’m reading or add me on Goodreads!

28. The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

the hating game

5/5 stars.

After reading The Unhoneymooners last month, I was craving some more romance. This book had it all! This was a perfect summer beach read and had the right balance of comedy and steam. Highly recommend to anyone who has been craving some slightly steamy romance in their life!

29. The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena

the couple next door

3/5 stars.

I pulled this one off of my shelf because I realized I hadn’t read a thriller in a while. It actually ended up being a really fast-paced read right from the very start! I spent my afternoon plopped on the couch and devoured every page. I don’t think this was my favorite book of 2019. Actually, this wasn’t even a favorite thriller. But the fact that it was so fast-paced made it SO worth it and was a solid 3 stars. Bonus points for a really twisty plot that had me wanting more!

30. All Your Perfects by Colleen Hoover

all your perfects

3/5 stars.

This was a book club pick (via me). I knew I had it on my shelf and so I threw it in the ring as an option for August’s book club. The overwhelming consensus was that it was “meh”. It was definitely not my favorite Colleen Hoover book and there were many parts where I found myself very confused/disappointed. However, I enjoyed that this story was told in an alternating past/present sort of format and I do enjoy Colleen Hoover’s style of writing. The subject matter is also super important — infertility. I’d love to see more books about this topic!

31. Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom

tuesdays with morrie

3/5 stars.

Honestly, I don’t know why it has taken me so long to read this book. It was so heart-wrenching and I 100% cried at the end. After reading through some reviews on Goodreads, though, I realized I agree with a lot of the 5 star reviews as well as the 1-2 star reviews. Hence, my 3.5 star rating. It was definitely a quick read full of good nuggets of wisdom and good quotes but I think I was expecting more from it!

32. Talking as Fast as I Can by Lauren Graham

talking as fast as i can

3.5/5 stars.

I read this one on the beach in one day! It was a great way to wrap up binging Gilmore Girls and A Year in the Life. She spoke about her life experiences, her time on Parenthood, and of course Gilmore Girls! My favorite chapters were the ones where she talked about her time on set. I thought it was a solid memoir but I sort of wished she went more in depth in some chapters! I loved her writing style, though, I could just hear her reading each word! Because of this, I thought this would be a great book to listen to on audio as well.

Currently Reading.

I started Britt-Marie was Here by Fredrik Backman at the beach on Sunday! It’s the second book I’ve read by him this year. It’s starting a bit slow but it’s good. I think he does a great job with characters and character development. I’m also in the middle of the book Before We Were Strangers by Renee Carlino. It’s good, but I’m reading it on my phone which makes it hard for me to want to pick it up over a physical book. Getting there, though! What are you reading right now?
