What I Read in May

Reading update time! First of all, I want to apologize for being so absent on the blog lately! I was busy, you know, getting my master’s degree (eek! more on that later) but I’m SO EXCITED to officially be done school forever and have some free time to put back into blogging. Let me know what types of posts you want to see in the comments!

We have officially reached the halfway point of 2019 and I can’t believe it. If you remembered last month’s post, I didn’t have a great reading month in April so I was determined to make up for it in May! I ended up reading 5 books which is awesome and brings me to 21 books so far this year! This puts me right on track with my 52 book reading goal.

If you want to catch up on what I’ve read so far this year, here are my reading update posts from January, February, March, and April. And if you like keeping up with what I read in real time, you can follow me on Instagram where I post pics of what I’m reading or you can add me on Goodreads!

AND in case you forgot, I’m participating in the POPSUGAR Reading Challenge this year… so I’m including what prompt I read the book for if you were curious. And now for the reading update…

17. The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

the glass castle

5/5 stars.

“Your favorite prompt from a past POPSUGAR Reading Challenge” (A book that’s been on your TBR too long)

This book was wild in the best way. It reminded me a lot of Tara Westover’s Educated which I read earlier this year. The Glass Castle had been on my TBR for a while so I’m really happy I found it at The Last Bookstore! I have been really loving memoirs lately and this one did not disappoint. I even shared it with my clinical supervisor after she finished Educated because I assured her it would be right up her alley! Definitely recommend this to anyone who loved Educated or is interested in memoirs/learning through another’s perspective.

18. Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate

before we were yours

5/5 stars.

“A book told from multiple character POVs”

I read this book for my IRL book club this month and it was SO good. When I read the description I wasn’t sure I was going to enjoy it but I definitely did. This book is historical fiction paired with flash-forwards of present day. It tells the story of the Tennessee Children’s Home scandal with fictional characters. I highly, highly recommend this book because I couldn’t stop thinking about it for weeks! I gave it to my mom to read next because it was so heartbreaking and interesting at the same time.

19. Normal People by Sally Rooney

normal people

4/5 stars.

“A book with a two word title”

Normal People has been all over the bookstagram community for weeks. I decided to order it in my May BOTM box and picked it up when I was in the mood for something shorter and contemporary. I really loved Rooney’s writing style. Her characters were extremely raw and real and I loved that so much. I truly felt like I was reading about real people instead of a shallow facade of a character. The reason I docked a star is because I felt the ending could have been done better and it didn’t leave me feeling satisfied with everything that had gone on throughout the book. I still loved it though and definitely would recommend to anyone!

20. Where’d You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple

3/5 stars.

“A book with a question in the title”

I had such high hopes for this book! I got tons of DMs on Instagram from people saying how much they loved this. I could not get into it. First of all, it took FOREVER for Bernadette to even disappear, and after she did things got SO weird. I understand that this book is supposed to be satire but I don’t think I laughed even once. Maybe it just isn’t my cup of tea/sense of humor, and that’s fine. But I definitely want to see the movie to see how they play this one out. Should be interesting!

21. Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin

3/5 stars.

“A book with an item of clothing or accessory on the cover”

I wanted to close out the month of May/bring in the summer with a fun, beachy chick-lit book. This definitely delivered! I don’t think it was the finest piece of literature and also not the ~best~ message, but I was totally invested in the characters and it satisfied my beachy/chick-lit craving. I got a ton of responses when I posted this picture on Instagram also and while I didn’t totally hate this book, I really hated Darcy so I don’t think I can manage to read Something Blue. Oh well! I definitely am going to watch the movie (made in 2011) this week though, I love John Krasinski and after watching the trailer it’s definitely a movie I want to make sure I see!
