What I Read in July

I don’t know why, but every summer I get into sort of a reading slump. Last summer I think I read 3 books total between June and August. I don’t think I prioritize reading as much in the summer because I have so much free time. I guess I tell myself that I can basically sit down and read whenever? And then I never actually do. Does anyone else have this problem or am I crazy?

Anyway, I am no longer on track to hit 52 books by December 31st. But I’ve realized over the course of the year that my reading ebbs and flows, and for now I’m just really trying to be consistently reading something. My Goodreads page says that I’m 3 books behind schedule right now which really was a wake up call for me. I’ve been reading every day for the past week so let’s hope that continues and I catch up with my goal ASAP!

If you want to catch up on what I’ve read so far this year, here are my reading update posts from January, February, MarchAprilMay, and June. And if you like keeping up with what I read in real time, you can follow me on Instagram where I post pics of what I’m reading or add me on Goodreads! I’m participating in the POPSUGAR Reading Challenge this year… so I’m including what prompt I read the book for if you were curious. I’m mostly down to the hard prompts so some of these didn’t fit into any category. So if there isn’t a prompt with the book, that’s why!

Now, let’s get down to some ~reviews~. Here’s what I read in July!

25. The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren

the unhoneymooners

4/5 stars.

“A book by two female authors”

This book was the PERFECT beach read. This was our July book club book and it was such a great summer pick. The characters were likeable and the plot was juicy. It wasn’t life changing but it was so fun to read and I definitely felt satisfied when it was finished. It put me into a romance/rom-com mood and was the reason why I bought a few more romance books. I realized I barely had any on my shelves!

26. Recursion by Blake Crouch

recursion

5/5 stars.

“A book revolving around a puzzle or game” — kind of a stretch but I’m going with it

Fair warning: you will be confused reading this book. You will not get a satisfying ending. But you will love the ride.

I loved Dark Matter so I figured this book would be similarly good. It definitely was. This was such a great book. I loved having my mind blown every few pages and thought it was challenging but fun to try to keep up with all the crazy ish that was happening. I gave this 5/5 stars because of how engaging and absolutely mind blowing it was. Highly recommend!

27. How Not to Die Alone by Richard Roper

how not to die alone

3.5/5 stars.

After Recursion, I was sort of in a book slump. On vacation, I started TWO different books but wasn’t hooked on either of them. I wanted something that was more on the literary fiction side that wouldn’t take too long to read. Usually after a “book hangover” I want to read something short and quick to get me through to the other side. This book wasn’t super short, but I breezed through it in about 4 days of on and off reading.

The story was interesting but I felt like the book ended up being about something totally different than I thought. The main character was slightly annoying at times and I felt like yelling into the pages at him a few times. Overall, it was the perfect book to get me out of my slump and back into reading something. Glad I picked this one up even though it wasn’t a favorite.

Currently reading.

Right now I’m about halfway through reading The Hating Game. I just ordered my August BOTM box (sign up through my referral link and we both get a free book!) and I picked The Whisper Man as my August pick along with Three Women and The Gifted School as my add-ons. I have to read All Your Perfects by Colleen Hoover for my book club this month so look for a review on that one coming up as well!

What are you reading right now? How many books did you read in July?
