What I Read in January

We’re back with the 2020 edition of what I read!!! This post contains affiliate links.

Each month in 2019, I recapped the books I read and shared some thoughts about them. In these posts, I will also share any new books I purchased and what BOTM book I chose (you can sign up for BOTM here… I’ve been a member since 2017 and I love it so much!) Since this is the first “what I read” post of 2020… I’m going to share some other fun things to catch you guys up on my reading journey between December and now.

My 2020 Reading Goal.

My Goodreads challenge reading goal is 52 books this year. I challenged myself to read 52 books in 2019 but fell short by 10. It’s not looking too great for me right now either, honestly haha. I’m about 5 books behind schedule — yikes! It has been a slow two months of reading but I’m hoping I can make up some ground this summer!

Bad B*tch Book Club.

I joined an online book club and I’m really excited about it! I even bought some merch 😉 This book club is mostly virtual (depending on your city, there are in-person meetups as well) and books are chosen through a virtual vote. The Facebook group has over 1,000 members and the picks have been amazing so far. I’ve read both the January and February books!

Ok, now let’s get to what I read in January!

1. Evvie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes

evvie drake starts over

4/5 stars.

Really glad this was my first book of the year! I enjoyed this story a lot and loved reading about Evvie. She seemed so real and I was rooting for her from the very beginning. I enjoyed the small town vibe of this book and it made it a cozy type of read.

Lots of great characters, a unique plot, and fun setting made this one unputdownable. I would def recommend this if you haven’t read it already!

2. Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb

maybe you should talk to someone

5/5 stars.

This book had been sitting on my shelf since April and I’m so glad I was finally pushed to read this by the Bad B*tch Book Club. I really loved this one. I’ve never gone to therapy, but I’ve considered it a lot the past few years. Reading the experiences of a therapist in therapy as well as stories from her own clients was really eye opening and interesting. The book felt long in parts but ultimately I enjoyed every page. Def recommend Maybe You Should Talk to Someone to anyone who feels like they need a break from fiction or traditional memoirs!

BOTM January Pick(s).

I always get a ton of questions about which book I picked for my BOTM box so I decided to add it into my monthly reading round-ups!. This month, I decided to go with The Sun Down Motel as my January pick and Long Bright River, This Tender Land, and The Heart’s Invisible Furies as an add-ons! This Tender Land was offered for free as a Book of the Year nominee.

I skipped the month in February!

I’ve been a BOTM member since May 2017 and I love it! It’s the best book subscription box I’ve found. Every month, Book of the Month chooses five books and I get to pick the one I want. If none of the books appeal to you, you can skip! Credits roll over into the following month. (If you sign up with my referral link, we’ll both get a free book!)

Books I Bought in December/January.

books i bought this month

So this stack looks like a lot (because it is) but also a lot of the books are HUGE and definitely make the stack look bigger 😉 I mentioned the books on the bottom were in my BOTM box this month. I also got a book from my brother for Christmas from the author of Ask Again, Yes called Fever. It was so sweet actually — he looked at my blog and my most recent reads and found another book by the same author. I can’t wait to read it! I also got my own copy of Little Women and The Dreamers from one of the bookstores in NYC. I got The Grace Year and Such A Fun Age from Barnes & Noble. Sadie and My Stroke of Insight were two books I bought second-hand at Green Apple Books in San Francisco!

Currently Reading.

Right now, I’m reading Red at the Bone and Such A Fun Age! I’m almost done Red at the Bone and I’m about halfway through Such A Fun Age. What are you currently reading?
