Advice for College Students (feat. Amazon Prime Student)

Today is the beginning of the end. I know that sounds super corny, but today marks the first day my last spring semester. This is my last semester of undergrad. Just typing that out feels really weird because I always felt like college was dragging along. But here we are!

I was thinking about writing a post about how I prep for the spring semester but then I realized that I had a lot more to say on this momentous occasion so I settled on the idea of writing a post full of advice and my hopes and wishes for this last semester of college. If you’re a senior, maybe this post will make you feel a little nostalgic. Thinking back on the past 7 semesters, I’ve realized just how fast the time has flown!

Document everything and live in the moment.

Take lots and lots of pictures. Save your Snapchat stories. Write in a journal. Take polaroids. Try to cherish every moment you can. I’m guilty of always trying to fast forward. I can’t wait to graduate, I can’t wait to move on to grad school, I can’t wait to be an SLP. The list goes on and on. I’m trying to get better at this, but I want you guys to continuously remember that college is fleeting. It’s goes by so quickly so breathe in every moment!

Know when to use Rate My Professor.

Every semester up until my junior year I used Rate My Professor religiously. I wouldn’t sign up for a class until I had completed a full background check on the professor and was SURE that they’d be the best person to teach me the course. I had no time for crappy teachers or for teachers who were “too tough” or teachers that cracked stupid jokes. It wasn’t until my junior year that I finally stopped putting so much weight on the Rate My Professor ratings. Most of the people writing there are either in love with the professor or hate their guts so you’re really not getting a well rounded opinion of them anyway. Learn to have some blind faith and know that when you’re in the ~real world~ there’s no such thing as Rate My Boss or Rate My Coworkers… you’ll just have to deal. Better get started now!

Call your parents.

They want to know how you’re doing. Trust me.

Find good friends/roommates.

My college experience wouldn’t be anything like it is if it weren’t for my incredible roommates. My friend/roommate Kelly has literally been there since day 1 and I couldn’t imagine my time here without her. My friend Maddie was my first friend in the major and although we haven’t seen each other as much this year, I still know to turn to her whenever I’m feeling stuck or lost in coursework or if I need someone to vent to who won’t judge me. Maddie gets it and I love her for that.

You’ll probably study better in the library.

Yes, I was in denial my first two years of school. I thought I could study just as well from my dorm room or my living room couch. WRONG. My study habits changed drastically and I now know I study so much better in the library where it’s quiet and there are no distractions. If you feel like you are stuck in your old ways of studying but those ways aren’t working for you, try heading to the library, TECH center, or local coffee shop. It might just change your GPA!

Don’t buy your textbooks from the bookstore.

Seriously. Don’t do it. Get your books using the Amazon Textbooks Store.

When you sign up for Amazon Prime Student, there is no cost for the first six months, courtesy of Sprint and you can cancel at any time. Amazon offers savings of up to 80% off price list for rentals between 30 to 360 days and up to 60% off purchases. With Amazon’s flexible rental program, you can decide how long to keep the books. And, when it comes time to send items back, Amazon will pay for return shipping. I’ve gotten almost all of my books from Amazon over the past 4 years. It’s super convenient and much cheaper than getting books from your school’s bookstore!

But signing up for Amazon Prime Student isn’t just a great way to get your textbooks. Once you sign up, you’ll be eligible for Free Two-Day Shipping, exclusive college deals, unlimited streaming of tens of thousands of movies and TV shows with Prime Video, and so much more!

You can find out about the latest deals and promotions by following Amazon Prime Student on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat (add ‘amazonstudent’).

It’s okay to not know.

There are so many people who start college and freak out because they don’t know what they’re doing or what they want to do with their lives. It’s okay to not know what your future holds. It took me a while to be comfortable with that.

This semester I have one goal: enjoy it. Grad school applications are done, my future is out of my hands and it’s time to let God and fate do its work. I know I’ve done everything I can these past 3.5 years, so now it’s time to sit back and take in everything I’ve accomplished.

College is no joke but it is one wild ride. Thank you all for coming along on mine. Let’s go after this semester and most of all, enjoy it.

Although I am long-done with school, the reminder to document everyday life more is still valid. Thanks for that reminder. XO

I totally agree about Rate My Professor. What you need from a teacher can be so personal, you can’t always trust other people’s opinions.

I use to always go to the library to study it was always so quiet and helpful!

I just graduated college in December, a semester early and it’s so weird to be done. I definitely agree with the document/enjoy college tip, I tell all my friends who are finishing up to not rush this last semester. Once it’s over, it’s over forever and it’s a strange feeling haha. Also, amazon prime and slug books saved my wallet once I figured it out haha.

I didn’t buy textbooks from my school after the first semester. That was the first thing I learned after spending SO much and getting nothing back. Also, I totally agree about trying to document everything!

I love Amazon Prime Student, too! Also, the tip about calling your parents is so true. It’s easy to forget about family when you’re away at school, but calling home always brings me right back (and makes me just a tad emotional).

I lived at the library.. I could never study in my room lol. I remember being in college and using the mess out of amazon prime! It is definitely worth it. Luckily I did not have to pay for books, they were already included in my tuition which is rare.

Amen to this entire post, especially the last piece of advice. Not knowing is part of the fun in being a young adult. And if you are lucky enough to know what you want, you quickly learn that it’s not happening anytime soon, or even maybe at all. Living in the moment and enjoying the ride is crucial.

These are awesome tips! i actually laughed out loud at the Rate My Professor one because I have literally used it for all of my classes so far! But you’re right – people’s ratings all depend on what kind of student they are. You have to be careful with it!

I definitely understand the whole studying in the library thing. I still try and convince myself I can do my homework at home but it never gets done. The library is just a great environment to be in when studying. I also check out all professors on Rate My Professor because the one time I didn’t, I got stuck with the worst professor at the University. These are all such great tips!
