Fall Reading List 2016

fall reading list

Happy second day of fall! Today I’m sharing my fall reading list. One of my favorite things to do is share my current TBR list with you guys. I always love seeing what people are reading and it motivates me to read more and add more books to my ever-growing list! If you love books and aren’t on Goodreads yet, you’re missing out. I know I talk about it in almost every book post, but I just love that site so much. It’s a great way to meet some bibliophiles and catch up with what books are popular and what books others are reading! Plus, it’s fun and rewarding to update your status that you finished a book or see your progress in the yearly reading challenge (side note: my goal is to read 25 books this year and I’m only at 12… #help).

Anyway, I have a long list of books that I hope to read soon but I’m only going to share a few of them right now. I’m currently applying to grad school (and taking the GRE in a few weeks…) so I’m not planning to get a TON of reading done but I hope to at least finish the book I’m currently reading and maybe one or two more. I always add more books to my list than I know I’ll get to, but I think it helps to be ambitious!

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

I started this book in August and I’m still not done. It’s a big one (550 pages!) but it’s SO so interesting and I absolutely love the narration. I’ve been meaning to read this for a while so I’m glad I’m finally getting to it! It’s a lot different than I anticipated but in a good way! Here’s a description from Goodreads:

Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak’s groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau.

This is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul.

Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover

I bought this as an eBook when it was on sale over the summer and I can’t wait to read it! This is one of the last CoHo books I have to read. You guys probably know that I’m obsessed with her because I have at least one of her books listed on every book-related post I write!

At twenty-two years old, Sydney has a great life: She’s in college, working a steady job, in love with her wonderful boyfriend, Hunter, and rooming with her best friend, Tori. But everything changes when she discovers Hunter’s cheating on her–and she is left trying to decide what to do next.

Sydney becomes captivated by Ridge, her mysterious neighbor. She can’t take her eyes off him or stop listening to the passionate way he plays his guitar every evening out on his balcony. And there’s something about Sydney that Ridge can’t ignore, either. When their inevitable encounter happens, they soon find themselves needing each other in more ways than one… (via Goodreads)

The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman

My Nana read this book recently with her book club (how cute is that?!) and she happened to have an extra copy to give me. I can’t wait to read this, as I saw the movie trailer and was instantly hooked! I haven’t read a book like this before which I think is one of the things that intrigues me most. This one is definitely a book I’ve marked “hurry up and read”!

After four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a day’s journey from the coast. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season and shore leaves are granted every other year at best, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby’s cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby.

Tom, whose records as a lighthouse keeper are meticulous and whose moral principles have withstood a horrific war, wants to report the man and infant immediately. But Isabel has taken the tiny baby to her breast. Against Tom’s judgment, they claim her as their own and name her Lucy. When she is two, Tom and Isabel return to the mainland and are reminded that there are other people in the world. Their choice has devastated one of them.

M. L. Stedman’s mesmerizing, beautifully written novel seduces us into accommodating Isabel’s decision to keep this “gift from God.” And we are swept into a story about extraordinarily compelling characters seeking to find their North Star in a world where there is no right answer, where justice for one person is another’s tragic loss. (via Goodreads)

Left Neglected by Lisa Genova

Lisa Genova is the same author who wrote Still Alice and if Left Neglected is anything like it, I know I’m in for an amazing read. I’m in a SLP book club on Goodreads and this is one of their upcoming books so I hope I’ll get to read it soon and participate in discussion about it!

Sarah Nickerson, like any other working mom, is busy trying to have it all. One morning while racing to work and distracted by her cell phone, she looks away from the road for one second too long. In that blink of an eye, all the rapidly moving parts of her over-scheduled life come to a screeching halt. After a brain injury steals her awareness of everything on her left side, Sarah must retrain her mind to perceive the world as a whole. In so doing, she also learns how to pay attention to the people and parts of her life that matter most. (via Goodreads)

Hidden Bodies by Caroline Kepnes

I read You a few months ago and I couldn’t put it down. It was such a whirlwind of a book with some questionable characters that you also couldn’t help but love. It was weird but I loved it and I’ve been putting off reading the second installment because I don’t really know if Hidden Bodies can live up to the hype I’ve put around You. But nevertheless, I’m going to read it ASAP because it’s coming out in paperback and, ya know, #brokecollegekidprobs.

Joe Goldberg is no stranger to hiding bodies. In the past ten years, this thirty-something has buried four of them, collateral damage in his quest for love. Now he’s heading west to Los Angeles, the city of second chances, determined to put his past behind him.

In Hollywood, Joe blends in effortlessly with the other young upstarts. He eats guac, works in a bookstore, and flirts with a journalist neighbor. But while others seem fixated on their own reflections, Joe can’t stop looking over his shoulder. The problem with hidden bodies is that they don’t always stay that way. They re-emerge, like dark thoughts, multiplying and threatening to destroy what Joe wants most: true love. And when he finds it in a darkened room in Soho House, he’s more desperate than ever to keep his secrets buried. He doesn’t want to hurt his new girlfriend—he wants to be with her forever. But if she ever finds out what he’s done, he may not have a choice… (via Goodreads)

The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware

It seems this book is rising to fame just like The Girl on the Train did, but I’m not complaining because it sounds amazing. This is another one I’m hoping to read this season but I think it might also be a good beach read for when I go to Florida in January!

In this tightly wound story, Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. At first, Lo’s stay is nothing but pleasant: the cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, gray skies fall, and Lo witnesses what she can only describe as a nightmare: a woman being thrown overboard. The problem? All passengers remain accounted for—and so, the ship sails on as if nothing has happened, despite Lo’s desperate attempts to convey that something (or someone) has gone terribly, terribly wrong… (via Goodreads)

In hindsight, The Light Between Oceans is a great story! But, while I was reading it, I didn’t enjoy how it was written. I’m very interested in seeing the movie though! The Woman in Cabin 10 sounds good, too.
