Meet Grace

I have an announcement: MY FAMILY ADOPTED A DOG!

My brother and I have been begging my parents for a dog for a longgg time but I guess the perfect opportunity never presented itself. Until Grace walked into our life. Literally. Last Saturday, April 2nd, was my birthday. I was walking home from the train station with my roommate Kelly and as she was opening the front door to our apartment, I noticed our trashcan (which was tilted over on its side) started moving.

“Kelly there’s a dog in our trashcan,” I said.

Just after we got her out of the trashcan on our porch

She turned to look and, yes, there was our Grace huddling inside the overturned (empty) trashcan. She was scared and dirty but still oh-so-friendly. Although I love dogs and most animals, I’m usually very nervous to approach any strays. Kelly, on the other hand, is never afraid (lol) and she helped her out of the trashcan and immediately began cuddling her. I wasn’t feeling too hot from the night before but I stayed outside with Kelly for a few minutes and brought down some water for her. We debated over what to do, but Kelly ultimately decided to call the police.

The shelter took this picture of Grace when they put her up for adoption on their website

After calling them, they said they would get in touch with Animal Control and they should be around within a few hours. Kelly brought Grace into the hallway of our apartment where she ended up staying for almost 6 hours. Kelly ended up calling Animal Control and they told her the police department had never gotten in touch with them. Because of this, she was still there when my family arrived to take me to my birthday dinner. My brother immediately fell in love with her.

Grace and my brother

“Mom she’s supposed to be ours, it’s fate,” my brother had insisted. My parents really couldn’t argue with that. After we came back from dinner, Animal Control had taken her but our family hadn’t forgotten. We called almost every day to check to see if she would be put up for adoption. On Wednesday, my brother got confirmation that she was being put up for adoption. She had gotten all of her shots and passed her tests. They were charging $25 for her. My family had decided they would go get her on Saturday. This was actually happening?!?!

My brother and I worried every day that someone was going to adopt her before us but on Saturday, my family made the drive to the Hunting Park shelter and officially adopted her.

Seeing her at home for the first time

I’m so happy, shocked, excited, and amazed about how this all went down. I’m so happy to know that she’s now a part of a loving family (MY family) and won’t ever have to be as scared, dirty, and lonely as she was when we found her.
