The Best (Non-Traditional!) Christmas Songs

Best Christmas Songs

One of the craziest things to me about Christmas is that we play the same Christmas songs over and over and over every year. It’s hard for artists to release their own new songs because we so rarely accept them. Some of my favorite Christmas songs are the ones we don’t hear on the radio 1000 times per day over the holidays. It is my hope to introduce you to some of these songs. Who knows, maybe you’ll find your new favorite?

Christmas Lights – Coldplay

This is arguably my favorite non-traditional Christmas song. Coldplay brings you the perfect balance of everything that’s needed in a beautiful Christmas melody!

The First Noel (feat. Owl City) – tobyMac

I have always loved singing this song in church and this version is great! Owl City and tobyMac, what could be better?

Ho Ho Hopefully – The Maine

This song is tied with Christmas Lights. I love The Maine’s whole Christmas album, you should definitely check it out!

The Man With The Bag – Jessie J

Jessie J KILLS this version. I absolutely love her voice!

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays – *NSYNC

I couldn’t NOT put this song on here. Come on.

Mistletoe – Colbie Caillat

I love Colbie Caillat and this song is one of my favorites to play on guitar around the holidays!

Mistletoe – Justin Bieber

Now that the Biebs is growing on all of us, it’s time to bring back his Christmas album. Don’t lie… you’ve jammed to this at some point.

Underneath The Tree – Kelly Clarkson

Slay, Kelly. Slay.

White Christmas (Duet with Shania Twain) – Michael Bublé

This might be one of my favorite Christmas duets. I love Michael Bublé (who doesn’t?) and Shania Twain sounds amazing. Their voices mesh perfectly.

Winter Song – Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson

And, last but not least, this amazing duet between Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson. It will awaken the winter spirit within you. Promise.

What are your favorite Christmas/holiday songs?

I haven’t heard most of these, and I LOVE Christmas music! Thanks for sharing! I spend most of December playing both Pentatonix Christmas albums on repeat in my classroom. I’m obsessed with their music, and it’s one of the only things I can play that all my students like.

I’m a fan of a lot of these and they’re on my holiday playlist but I loved seeing Winter Song on there! My cousin introduced me to it and I love it, but yeah…it’s totally NOT a traditional “Christmas” song. And the Coldplay one is one of my faves <3

GREAT list! I also like the newer songs like this, and it’s like they may play them a little on the radio, but then the next year they won’t play them anymore! Humpf!
