Are You The One? | How I Met The One

How I Met The One - Kayla Blogs

You’re in for a treat! Today I’m bringing you this week’s #Ryday post a day early! Just a heads up… I’m gonna get a little sentimental. You might have read Ryan’s “short version” of how we met a few weeks ago on the blog, but this week I wanted to take the opportunity to really dive into the details of how we actually came to know (and love!) each other.

MTV Are You the One

I started thinking about this after I saw the MTV show Are You the One? for the first time. If you’ve never heard of the show, there are 20 beautiful humans who are sent to a tropical destination. There are 10 girls and 10 guys. The whole point of the show is to figure out who their perfect match is. It’s especially entertaining as a viewer because MTV has this awesome game where you can play along and submit who you think are the perfect matches. Another bonus to the game is that if you guess correctly and win the episode, you will be entered for a chance to win a trip for 2 to HAWAII. I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve been just dying for a tropical vacation. It would be awesome to win! I suggest checking out the trailer and catching up on the first few episodes of this season!

The beginning.

I first met Ryan in October of 2011 and it was totally by chance. That was 4 years ago and, to this day, I just can’t get over how crazy it was that our paths even crossed. At the time, I was working at my dad’s store. He owned a Philly Pretzel Factory in my hometown and I had been working there for about two and a half years. That day, I happened to be working with a guy named Rhett who went to my high school and was the same age as me. Ryan happened to also be friends with Rhett and he came in to harass him while he was working. That was the first time I had ever seen him and we barely spoke 2 words to each other.

After Ryan (or Al as his friends all called him) left the store, I had friend requested him on Facebook. Classy, I know. Keep in mind I was only 16 at the time and I didn’t know how to be smooth. Anyway, he accepted my friend request and I immediately decided it would be a great idea to message this guy that I barely knew and get to know him. I remember Ryan being super nice to me and just talking to me even though I was this annoying little high school girl.

Controversy.

After we had been talking for a few months, I decided that I really liked him. But there was a problem. He was 21 and I was still 16 years old. On New Year’s Eve, he opened up and finally told me that he had a crush on me. He didn’t expect it to happen and he certainly wasn’t looking for any sort of relationship with me when we met. But through all of our conversations, he realized that we actually did have a lot in common.

We knew that it would be a struggle. My parents didn’t approve of it. In fact, they didn’t let me see him because they believed that it was just a phase. I was angry with them then but I understand now that they only wanted to protect me. On January 13th, 2012, we had our first kiss and that is the date we chose to celebrate our anniversary.  After spending lots of time sneaking around, my parents finally agreed to meet him in May 2012. Once they met him they agreed that I could see him and our entire relationship changed for the better. We were allowed to see each other so much more now and we were able to do so many more things as a couple.

And the rest is history.

I’m so blessed to have been with this guy for the past 4 years of my life. He’s not only my boyfriend but my best friend, life counselor, blog assistant, driver, and basically anything else you could possibly imagine. He’s there for me every day, no matter what, no questions asked. I couldn’t have come up with a better guy for me if I had designed him myself (lol).

To the girls out there who have found “The One”, treasure every moment you have with them. To the girls out there who have yet to find “The One”, just remember not to rush things and that your time will come when you least expect it. I promise!

Many thanks to MTV for sponsoring today’s story and encouraging me to check out “Are You The One?”

So sweet congratulations. I imagine it’s hard to grasp with a 16 yr old daughter, but I was 22 went I met my husband and he was 27. So it would been the same thing! Crazy.

I imagine things would have been a lot different if I had met him at 22! It’s nice to hear of other people who have similar or the same age gap. I think our age difference is one of the reasons why our relationship is so strong.

Such a cute story, I absoloutely love reading other people’s love stories! My boyfriend is also a bit older than me (10 years!) and I worried my family would struggle with it at first. I was over 18 when we met so my family couldn’t do much but I can relate to your feeling because I totally wanted them to approve! Luckily my family (like yours) was able to see how good we are together and look beyond the age difference.

SO ADORABLE! Ahhh that’s so exciting! I really hope you and Ryan have many more years together! I know it’s hard being in a relationship when age is a huge factor, even though my boyfriend and I are both 19 and we have been dating for 8 years we still have issues having others see us as “young adults”. But anyways, that’s again so adorable and exciting – especially since he helps you with your blog too!
