Restaurant Review: Mad Mex

Okay guys, I definitely didn’t have a super exciting weekend but I just had to post about this amazing CalMex restaurant Ryan and I went to on Saturday night. It’s called Mad Mex and it’s been 2 full days since we’ve been there and we still just can’t get over it.

This is my first “food-related” post on the blog and I’m really excited about it! Ryan and I love going out to eat and try really hard to go to different places (especially when we aren’t near our hometown). Our rule this summer has been to try to only go to places that we can’t go to at home. We’ve been pretty good at following this rule. However, I was really surprised to learn that Mad Mex has a few locations in the Philly area. I’m very happy about that because we loved it so much!

My Mad Mex Experience

First of all, the atmosphere is great. The lighting was dim which made it perfect for our little date night. There were caveman-esque drawings as cutouts in the lampshades and along the walls which was really unique. We were seated right away at a high top table near the bar.

Our server was really sweet and I didn’t feel awkward talking to her like I usually do with some waiters/waitresses. Everyone working there seemed really down-to-earth which, for me, is really important. I didn’t see any staff that looked like they didn’t want to be there.

We started off ordering some chips & guac and a cup of salsa. When the food arrived, the guac and salsa was piled extraordinarily high in their ceramic bowls. Ryan and I were almost afraid it was all going to topple over! I think the best part about this place was that everything tasted really fresh. The salsa had a little bit of a kick to it (if you love spicy food and eat it all the time, you probably wouldn’t notice because I’m a wimp and can’t handle anything spicy) but I really enjoyed it even though spicy food isn’t really my jam. The guac was also amazing and (fun fact) it looked so good that I decided to try guac for the first time and I loved it! *high five*

When it came time to order, Ryan got the Carnitas Burrito and I got the Grande Nachos with some beef on them. The nachos come with jalapenos but I asked them to not put them on because, like I mentioned above, I’m not a big fan of spicy food. The nachos still had a kick to them but I wasn’t dying like I definitely would have been with the jalapenos!

Ryan let me have a bite (or five) of his burrito and it was just heaven. The tortilla was so soft and warm and fresh and it was honestly just the best food we’ve tasted in a while. You’d think we hadn’t had anything to eat in days. That’s how much we were obsessing over this food.

Here are some pics of me and my delicious nachos.

Seriously. Look at dem nachos. If you’re looking for a new Mexican restaurant to try, Ryan and I highly recommend Mad Mex! Unfortunately, the only locations they have right now are in PA and Ohio, but I’m hoping they’ll expand soon! We’re definitely going back at least a few more times before I leave, make no mistake about that!

What’s your favorite place to go to get some good eats?

I love Tex-Mex so much. This looks delicous! I’m honestly drooling right now! I’m very jealous, the food looks great! When i was studying abroad in Spain, all I wanted was a taco. so for friend-family Christmas I made them make tacos for me.
    Great post!

I have no idea if Mad Mex is a chain or not, cause I definitely visited one when I lived in Philly! Tex mex is my absolute favorite type of food!

Those nachos look super super good! As a waitress myself, it is so so important to make at least a little connection or hold a conversation with your table or the whole night will seem off. I always always try if I can, and if I have the time, to do that with all the tables I wait on on a daily basis! It makes their experience visiting my restaurant even better!

This sounds like the best restaurant. I adore mexican food (even though I’m like you and can’t really handle spicy-ness). Okay did I misread or did you just say you tried guacamole for the FIRST time????

I know, I’m SO late to the party! I’m just a really picky eater and I refuse to try things lol. It’s definitely something I’m working on but now I know I like guacamole!

Definitely looks delicious and sounds like awesome service. Definitely going to have to check it out. Looks like they have about 13 locations across 5 cities with 3 in Philly.
